Creating safe spaces for children with albinism to learn.
Less than half of the children with albinism complete primary school due to many reasons. Sometimes parents won't send them to school because they know that they will die young, meaning that education doesn't seem worth the investment. If children do attend, their poor vision often makes them unable to see the blackboard. Consequently, they are frequently misdiagnosed with learning disorders, and even parents and teachers who care for them believe they "can't learn."
In addition, ostracization from peers can limit children academically and socially. Often, classmates will bully and tease students with albinism due to their misperceptions about the condition.
But now there is an even more dangerous factor: the risk of being attacked on their way to or from school. We have had many PWAs be attacked on their long walks to school, and some have even been killed while simply seeking education.
So now, not only do many parents keep their children with albinism at home, but often parents must stay home to protect them, limiting resources further.
We have negotiated spaces in boarding schools, and transport the children to school. There we educate students and teachers about albinism, including ways to accommodate their low vision, so that the children will be accepted and integrated into the school environment. We also provide uniforms, school supplies, bedding, and other special needs. Soon our students are recognized as normal children with two special needs: skin protection and assistance with low vision
